The fugitive suspected RAF terrorist Garweg was apparently able to produce the documents he needed for his underground life: in his construction trailer, the LKA investigators came across equipment and materials that were needed for forging papers.

The suspected RAF member Burkhard Garweg, who was wanted, had apparently set up a forgery workshop. In the residential container in Berlin where he last lived, utensils and devices were discovered that could be used to forge documents, said the head of the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office leading the investigation, Friedo de Vries, to the weekly newspaper “Zeit”. The devices and tools have been confiscated and are currently being evaluated.

The LKA boss also said that Garweg was probably now traveling with a cover identity and a false passport of his own making. He used various aliases, most of which started with Martin. But he probably goes by a different first name now, de Vries told “Zeit”.

The suspected former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette was arrested in Berlin at the end of February, where she lived under an assumed name. The search continues for their suspected accomplices Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, who also belong to the former RAF command level and are said to have committed robberies together with Klette.

According to investigators, Garweg also lived in Berlin – apparently on a trailer lot used by members of the alternative scene. When it was stormed by the police, Garweg was not there. “We cannot currently say with certainty whether he fled immediately after Klette was arrested or whether he was still in Berlin afterwards,” the LKA boss told “Zeit”. De Vries assumes that Garweg has long been concerned with how he reacts when the pressure to investigate increases. He probably created a new “legend” for this case, with false papers and a fabricated CV – and with contacts who could testify to the false information.
