Baking soda is known as a natural and inexpensive cleaner. But it is also formidable against insects, without being harmful to humans.

Even in a well maintained home, insects can proliferate. Some, like flies, are simply annoying, others are more repulsive or even aggressive, like cockroaches or bed bugs. Attracted by the same things or living in colonies, they often arrive in large numbers. It can then become difficult to get rid of it.. Calling on a professional exterminator can be expensive, and the abuse of chemical insecticides is not recommended, especially in poorly ventilated areas.

However, it is possible to control insects with a natural and safe product for humans : baking soda. This powder is renowned for its many household uses, whether it is daily cleaning or the maintenance of household appliances. But it is also useful against many pests.

Insect repellent or poison

On some insects, it acts as a repellent. A teaspoon diluted in water with four spoons of olive oil will constitute a spray deterring mosquitoes from returning. Simply diluted in water, it will repel flies. Sprinkled on the place of passage ants, it will act as a good barrier. Similarly, sprinkled in small quantities or diluted, it repel bed bugs if you fear an invasion. However, it may not be enough if the infestation has already started.

Baking soda can also be used to decimate insect colonies. The sodium it contains is poisonous to some critters and will dehydrate others on contact. If you are invaded by cockroaches, mix in a small flat container equal parts of sugar and baking soda. With an identical density, the two products will mix perfectly. Attracted to sugar, cockroaches will also ingest sodium. The technique is also effective against silverfish.
