Fine of up to 5,000 euros: Why a “to give away” box can be really expensive

First of all: If you would like to legally leave a box “to give away” on the side of the road, you must apply for a permit from the responsible regulatory office. The special use of the sidewalk allows you to leave the box even for several days. In this case, usage fees may apply.

In some situations, however, the authorities turn a blind eye. It is important that you make sure that the sidewalk is kept clear at all times. Not only pedestrians, but also wheelchair users, prams and older people with walkers may not be restricted. As soon as escape routes and fire brigade entrances are blocked, there are penalties.

Also note the following factors:

  • If rain is imminent, you should avoid putting boxes outside
  • Be sure to donate only adult-rated items
  • Only donate items that you would take with you yourself

Crates and boxes marked “for free” should also be left outside for a maximum of 24 hours. Otherwise you will quickly be considered illegal garbage dumping.

Incidentally, you can often hand in books, clothing and toys in libraries, second-hand shops and other social collection points.
