Fire at ASML: consequences for semiconductor industry still unclear

A fire in the Berlin plant of the technology company ASML unsettled investors on the stock exchanges on Monday. The supplier of components for microchip production had to accept heavy price losses at times. There were concerns that delivery bottlenecks for semiconductors could worsen. ASML announced that it will only be possible to make statements in a few days whether the fire in the plant in the Britz district on Monday night would have consequences for annual production.

According to the fire brigade, only part of the plant was affected by the fire. An automatic cleaning system caught fire on around 200 square meters.

According to the company, the site covers a total of 32,000 square meters, on which 1210 people work. For example, lithography systems for semiconductors are manufactured. The work is more likely to be known to Berliners under the name Berliner Glas. The Dutch company ASML took over Berliner Glas in 2020.

As a result of delivery problems in the corona pandemic, semiconductors are in short supply worldwide; car manufacturers, for example, had to cut production. ASML was one of the stock exchange favorites last year and gained over 70 percent in value.
