Fire at oil depot in Donetsk after Ukrainian shelling, local authorities say

(Reuters) – A fire broke out overnight on Tuesday at an oil depot in an area held by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine following a bombardment by Ukrainian forces on Donetsk, said the mayor of the city.

“As a result of the night bombing of the Budennovski district, there was a fire in a fuel depot,” Alexe Kulemzin said on Telegram.

The fire caused no casualties, Donetsk emergency services said. He was killed in the middle of the morning, said the mayor.

Reuters could not verify the information on the origin of the disaster.

Images shared on social media show flames near oil tanks on rails near the depot.

Donetsk is the capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Donetsk, one of the two entities of the Ukrainian region of Donbass, recognized only by Russia, Syria and North Korea.
