A forest fire has broken out above the municipality of Bitsch/Ried-Mörel (VS).
The extinguishing work is in progress, helicopters are also in use.
The Valais canton police asked people who were staying in the hamlet of Oberried to go to the assembly point in the community center in Ried-Mörel.
The population of Ried-Mörel was also asked to close doors and windows.
The fire started in Bitsch below the Massaweg. It then spread rapidly in the direction of the Riederhorn. Large flames can still be seen at the moment, as reported by pomona.ch. These are meters high and can be seen from afar. The wind was very strong, which made it difficult to extinguish the fire, it said.
Two helicopters were in action, police said. The size of the affected area is currently unclear. The cause is also not yet known.
The road to Ried-Mörel has been completely closed until further notice. The fire was reported to the police just before 5 p.m. The cause of the fire is currently undefinable, as the Valais police announced.
