Fire brigades in action – storms around Klagenfurt: golf ball-sized hailstones

A short but violent thunderstorm with hailstones the size of a golf ball fell in the Klagenfurt district on Friday evening. In Viktring and Krumpendorf in particular, the hailstones hit the ground like projectiles and are likely to have caused major damage. All fire brigades are currently in continuous operation.

“I don’t remember hailstones that big. I’ve lived in Krumpendorf for more than ten years, but that was terrible,” a woman from Krumpendorf told the “Krone”. The same happened to the residents of Viktring. The hailstones, the size of a golf ball, partially destroyed tents, garden facilities and canopies. Cars could also have been damaged. All fire brigades in Klagenfurt, Viktring and Krumpendorf are currently still in continuous use. The Krumpendorf fire brigade alone had to be deployed 14 times by the evening. But it went even further, as a new storm front moved over parts of Carinthia. The numerous visitors to the harbor festival in Klagenfurt’s east bay also had to flee. In Moosburg, too, the damage caused by the hail is likely to be enormous. A “Krone” reader reports on shredded crops, smashed windows, destroyed roof tiles, devastated vegetable gardens and leafless fruit trees. The fire brigades are also on duty in the Feldkirchen district. The storm hit there too.
