Fire in St. Peter/O. – Flames in the stable: Fire brigade fights for pigs

In the district of Dietersdorf am Gnasbach in St. Peter am Ottersbach (Styria), a fire broke out in a farm building on Thursday evening around 8:30 p.m. There are said to be more than a thousand pigs in it. The fire department is on duty.

A number of fire departments responded to a major fire in a pigsty between Hofstätten and Dietersdorf am Gnasbach on Thursday. “The stable building is completely on fire,” says press officer Erwin Irzl. 16 fire departments are already on site. “Some people are constantly being alerted. The water supply on site is very difficult.” There are also pigs in the stable. According to the police, there may be over a thousand. Some of the animals were in the outdoor enclosure next to the stable, some inside. The hundreds of firefighters are trying everything humanly possible to save the pigs. “The fire department is now fighting the fire and bringing the pigs out of the danger area,” says Irzl. People are currently not at risk. The stable works fully automatically. The operation will last at least until midnight, probably longer.
