Fire near Perpignan: the bodies will be returned to families


During the night from Sunday to Monday February 14, eight people, including a baby and a two-year-old child, died in the fire of three adjoining buildings in this town of 10,000 inhabitants, located about twenty kilometers from Perpignan. Since then, the work of the investigators in the rubble has not been easy, the structure of the buildings being weakened.

34 tons of rubble analyzed

Some 34 tonnes of rubble were extracted for analysis, said the prosecutor. Partial conclusions could be known as early as next week. Still according to Jean-David Cavaillé, three bottles of normal gas consumption of 13 kg were found. It is not yet known if they had gas or were empty and it cannot be said at this stage if they have any connection to the drama.

Regarding the possible presence at the scene of four individuals, there is “no concordance, for the moment, between the video surveillance and the testimonies”, the camera showing no traces in this direction. Jean-David Cavaillé also clarified that the person who had been seriously injured is currently in a stationary state. Of the eight people who died, five belonged to the same family. They are the baby, the two-year-old, their parents and their grandfather. Among the other three dead, there is a couple.
