A little ahead of Seagate’s program, two stores have lifted the veil on the first SSD PCIe Gen 5 from the American company.
If it may have given the impression of having a little ignition delay, Seagate has now joined its “little friends” Corsair or Crucial, to name only the most reactive.
PCIe Gen 5 begins to spread
Only a few days ago, Seagate officially announced the release of new firmware for its Firecuda 530 SSD. Firmware that brings DirectStorage technology to this excellent model.
Today, there’s no official announcement – at least not yet – but the successor to what remains one of the best PCIe Gen 4.0 SSDs is more than on track. Indeed, the brand new Firecuda 540 from Seagate has been seen on the Amazon.co.uk site, and this, while no press release has yet been published.
B&H also quickly followed in the footsteps of its competitor to also display the new SSD. Logically, the Firecuda 540 will allow Seagate to take a technological step forward: it will be the first model from the American company to use PCIe Gen 5.
Up to 10 GB/s read/write
A bit like Galax at the end of last year, however, there will be no question of competing with the best, at least initially. The Firecuda 540 should therefore not exceed 10 GB/s.
More specifically, Seagate mentions 10 GB / s in sequential reading and writing, but on the 2 TB capacity model. On the 1 TB version, it is only 9.5 GB / s in reading and 8.5 GB/s write. It should also be noted that a third version is planned by Seagate, with a 4 TB version which could see its speeds progress a little further.
These are very correct speeds despite everything, especially since they are accompanied by very good write endurance. We are talking here about 1,000 TB on the 1 TB, 2,000 TB on the 2 TB and, oddly, “only” 3,949 TB on the 4 TB which – as Seagate indicates – makes it possible to erase 90 % of its content every day for five years. It leaves time to see it coming!
Just before being removed, the sheets of these SSDs also made it possible to see the price: it was a question of 189.99 dollars for the 1 TB model and 319.99 dollars for the 2 TB version. then a little cheaper than the Crucial T700.
