As expected, Firefox 116 is dropping support for several older versions of Windows and macOS. If you have a relatively new machine, however, you shouldn’t be worried.
Mozilla has launched the rollout of Firefox 116, the first version of the browser to drop Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. These older versions of Windows are no longer supported, and the same goes for three more recent versions of macOS: macOS Sierra 10.12, High Sierra 10.13, and Mojave 10.14.
Firefox takes a drastic cut
This end of support does not fall from the sky, however. It was announced in June. It does not mean that users of these older versions of macOS and Windows will no longer be able to use Firefox: they will simply be upgraded to Firefox 115.1.0 ESR, which will extend the duration of support by about a year… until September 2024. After this date, however, you will have to change browsers or switch to a more recent OS.
With Firefox 116, Mozilla deploys anyway several interesting new features, such as improved keyboard controls for the sidebar selector, but also the ability to copy and paste files directly into Firefox. A separate volume control for Picture-in-Picture (PiP) is also on the cards.
This new version of the browser also deploys security patches and finally improves HTTP/2 download performance, among other new features.
