Firefox is getting an AI-powered feature that warns users when an online product has fake reviews. When arriving on the latter’s page, the tool gives a score out of 5 which indicates the degree of veracity of the comments left by the “users”. Practical for no longer being fooled while shopping.

Last May, the foundation announced the arrival of a new feature within Firefox, supposed to identify false reviews left on commercial sites. Already at the time, she mentioned the use of artificial intelligence, capable of detecting when a comment on a product was written by… artificial intelligence.
A few months later, the tool finally seems to be finding its way among users. Mozilla has indeed started the first tests “within a limited audience in the United States”, a spokesperson for the organization told The Verge. By clicking on it, the user brings up a sidebar analyzing the product page and, above all, a 5-star rating of the reviews left by Internet users. The higher the rating, the more trustworthy the page. Otherwise, there is a good chance that the comments are entirely false. The tool also highlights the opinions deemed most relevant to guide users in their choice.
Review Checker is the result of the collaboration between Mozilla and FakeSpot, which the foundation acquired earlier this year. The company has developed an AI trained to spot “patterns and similarities between reviews to identify those that are most likely to be misleading.” Additionally, FakeSpot also offers an extension for Chrome, Safari as well as an Android and iOS app. The integration of its Firefox tool will not mark the end of support for these variants, assured Mozilla.
