In Greece, a major fire is getting dangerously close to Athens. Thousands of people from the city’s suburbs have been evacuated as the flames advance. On the ground, the situation is chaotic, as dozens of residents try to protect their homes despite the dangerous situation, describes a Frenchman affected by the fire.
The flames are getting dangerously close to Athens. For several days, a major fire has been advancing towards the capital of Greece. Several towns in its suburbs have had to be evacuated, while nearly 700 firefighters are mobilized. And reinforcements, from neighboring countries but also from France, are expected in the coming hours.
As European firefighters make their way, local residents watch helplessly as the flames spread. “The fire passed very close to our house,” insists Thrassy, who lives in Pendeli, a small village of 5,000 inhabitants located 16 kilometers in the mountains northeast of Athens, on Europe 1. Although he and his family are not there, his friends are protecting his house as best they can. “The whole mountain is on fire. We are all very worried. The situation is changing all the time because the winds blowing at 70 km/h are making the fire move from one direction to another. The situation is precarious,” he confides.
Follow evacuation instructions
Although he didn’t lose anything in the flames, that’s not the case for everyone. “There are quite a few houses that are burned but people are still trying to control the fire. There is a very large mobilisation and the situation is terrible,” acknowledges this Frenchman living in Greece.
The French embassy recommends that French people in the region activate their geolocation and respect the evacuation instructions put in place by local authorities.
