Fires, urban rodeos, security: Gérald Darmanin on all fronts this summer

Alexis Delafontaine

Very mobilized this summer, nothing seems to escape the Minister of the Interior, who seems to want to reassure the French in the face of insecurity. With a basic objective: to impose its security line within the government to prepare its immigration law planned for the start of the school year, while trying to conquer the right-wing electorate.

He is on all fronts. Between the fires, the urban rodeos, the controversy with the mayor of Lyon or even that concerning the expulsion of Imam Hassan Iquioussen, Gérald Darmanin is very mobilized this summer and nothing seems to escape him. The Minister of the Interior wants to reassure the French in the face of disasters and rampant insecurity. And its objective is simple: to impose its security line within the government to prepare its immigration law planned for the start of the school year.

Conquer the right-wing electorate

Even if this is not really to the taste of all ministers. And in particular of Elisabeth Borne, the Prime Minister, who imposed a two-month debate on him before presenting his law. But above all, Gérald Darmanin wants to conquer the right-wing electorate, from the Republicans to the National Rally.

A strategy reminiscent of that of Nicolas Sarkozy fifteen years earlier. Then Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Sarkozy continues to travel punches to prepare his candidacy for the presidency. A paying strategy that Gérald Darmanin intends to take over.
