Internet access is mandatory for apps, but often it is not necessary. Some apps perform their services completely offline, but constantly load advertising, for example. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to ban apps from accessing the Internet with on-board resources.
This is where the NetGuard app, which is free in the basic version, comes into play. It is only available for Android and is a kind of firewall for smartphones. To make it all work without root access, the tool sets up a VPN to restrict internet access for apps.
Operation is simple: To start NetGuard, you have to flip the switch in the top left corner of the app.
Block internet access for apps
After setting up NetGuard, you will be presented with a list of your installed apps. Behind it are two green icons, one for WiFi and one for mobile data. As a rule, these entries are green, which means that Internet access is permitted via both paths.
To restrict internet access now, tap on one of the icons. For example, you can leave an app on the Internet in your home WLAN, but keep it offline when you’re on the go. So choose the app whose Internet access you want to control and make the settings.
In the details, you can make a few fine adjustments, such as allowing WLAN or mobile access when the screen is activated. So you can use the apps, but prevent constant Internet access in the background.
A block option is also interesting if there is a roaming connection. In this way you can save data volume in a targeted manner. System components can also be blocked. To do this, you need to enable the “Show system apps” item in the settings under “Advanced options”.
Extended functions possible
NetGuard comes with pro features that you can purchase. For example, you can display the log of the recorded data traffic, filter the network traffic or be notified of new apps and then make the settings right away via the notification.
A one-time fee of 8.99 euros is due for all Pro functions, but there are also options for individual purchases. There are no trackers in the open source app. NetGuard is also available through the alternative store F-Droid.
