The capital is creating a new, large green space: similar to Tempelhofer Feld, a spacious landscape park is to be created on the site of the former Tegel Airport. The core is the three kilometer long runway. The opening is planned for 2029.

The airfield of the former Berlin Tegel Airport is to become a landscape park. In the coming years, a unique leisure and relaxation area for Berliners and at the same time a protective reserve for flora and fauna will be created on an area of 190 hectares, as the state-owned company Grün Berlin announced. The first designs for the landscape park were presented in the afternoon on the airport grounds by Britta Behrendt, State Secretary for Climate Protection and the Environment, and Green Berlin Managing Director Christoph Schmidt.

According to the information, the focus of the park is the runway of the disused city airport, which is around three kilometers long and 60 meters wide. Accordingly, the runway should be preserved and can be used for jogging, cycling or skating. As with Tempelhofer Feld, entry to the landscape park should be free. The park, which is part of the Tegel city heath, should also remain closed at night.

The opening is planned for spring 2029. The financing for the development of the Tegeler Stadtheide landscape park comes from state funds. A total of 48.5 million euros is available. From April, free tours will be offered where those interested can find out more about the plans.

New city quarter in Tegel: groundbreaking ceremony in 2026

Tegel Airport was one of several airports for the megacity of Berlin. At the end of 2020, the airport in the north of the city was closed. BER is now the central airport for the capital region. The airport, officially called “Berlin Brandenburg ‘Willy Brandt’ Airport”, is located in Schönefeld in Brandenburg, south of the city limits of Berlin.

In addition to the landscape park, a new urban quarter is currently being built on the site of the former airport. Tens of thousands of people will live, work, learn, research and relax on 500 hectares. The core of the billion-dollar project is the Urban Tech Republic. In the future, the University of Technology will meet companies and start-ups here that will convert the research results into products and produce them on site. 2,500 students from the university are expected to move into the former airport terminal A in 2028. The “Schumacher Quartier” is to be built at the eastern end of the former airport area and will provide living space for 10,000 people. The groundbreaking is scheduled for 2026.
