First electric station wagon! – MG under power: facelift and two new models

For model year 2022, MG Motor, a subsidiary of the Chinese SAIC group, wants to continue its expansion course with a growing and also refreshed model range. In addition to a facelift for the already well-known B-segment SUV ZS EV, the launch of the MG5 electric station wagon and the large SUV model Marvel R Electric are due to be launched soon. They also want to be present in other European markets and expand the dealer network.

In Austria, MG will be launching the ZS EV with a new front look at the end of October. Among other things, the headlight technology, which is characterized by larger daytime running lights, has been modified. There is also an aerodynamically designed front apron in which the previous grille opening has been replaced by a closed surface painted in the vehicle color.

However, the question arises why this was done to the front, because the charging connector opening now has its own flap next to the MG logo and looks a bit clumsy cut into it. So far, the connection was hidden behind the logo.

There is now a choice of two battery versions with 51 or 72 kWh capacity, which allow WLTP ranges of 320 or 440 kilometers. So far, the ZS EV has been offered with a 44.5 kWh battery. An 11 kW 3-phase on-board charger is part of the standard equipment for the longer-range ZS EV. A connectivity system is also standard for both versions. The prices for the lifted ZS start at 34,490 and 38,490 euros.

Marvel R: A Generation Modern
At the same time, MG is launching the Marvel R, an electric model of the second generation. The SUV looks much more modern than the ZS EV. With a length of 4.67 meters, the significantly larger model will be available with two drive variants. The basis is a twin-engine rear-wheel drive with 132 kW / 180 PS, alternatively there is all-wheel drive and three motors that together mobilize 212 kW / 288 PS. The prices for the weaker version start at 43,990 euros, the performance version starts at 52,490 euros.

MG5 as the first electric station wagon
At the beginning of 2022, MG will also expand its portfolio to include the MG5, which is the first electrically powered station wagon to be offered in Austria. MG promises a trunk that can be expanded from 479 to around 1400 liters and two battery versions with 50 or 61 kWh for a range of 320 and 400 kilometers, respectively. The electric motor drives the Stromer with 115 kW / 156 PS and 260 Newton meters of torque. The price should be less than 40,000 euros.

In addition to its model range, MG also wants to expand its market presence in Europe. The Chinese brand with English roots is currently represented in 16 countries with over 200 sales outlets. In the first three quarters, MG was able to sell almost 40,000 vehicles, primarily to private customers. The network is expected to grow to 400 locations this year. They also want to compete in Portugal, Switzerland and Finland in the near future. The sales figures are likely to increase accordingly. Further model innovations are also planned in the medium term. Among other things, the introduction of an electric sports car is planned for 2024.
