first good news for 10 years!

The remuneration of the Livret A will finally be revised upwards. The new rate applicable from February 1 will be announced this Friday by the Minister of the Economy. Barring any surprises, it should go from 0.5% to 0.8%.

It is a historic day which is announced for the approximately 55 million holders of a Livret A. Friday the government will announce, for the first time since August 2011, an increase in the rate of the product of savings preferred by the French, and this from February 1, 2022 In almost 10 years, his remuneration has fallen from 2.25% to just 0.5% since February 2020, its lowest level.

This Friday morning, Insee (1) will lift the veil on the final price increase recorded in December 2021. It is this crucial data that will make it possible to calculate average inflation for the second half of 2021 and, by extension, the future Livret A rate.

A mathematical rise …

INSEE has already delivered a provisional estimate of inflation in December: +2.8% over one year. If this figure were confirmed, as often, the price increase would be +2.2% over the last 6 months of 2021. By applying the complex official calculation formula, the rate of the Livret From February 1 would be 0, 8%, an increase of 0.3 points.

Livret A: how much interest will the 0.8% remuneration earn?

With this publication from INSEE on Friday, the Governor of the Banque de France will propose the application (or not) of the mathematical formula. It will then be Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy, to validate or not this recommendation, before formalizing the new rate of the Livret A. Given the stake around the very sensitive question of purchasing power, the first priorities in the eyes of households, the Bercy tenant has decided to unveil the new Livret A rate to the crowd. He will announce it during the 1:00 p.m. newscast on TF1.

… but which could be improved

Bruno Le Maire has already announced that he was going to increase the Livret A rate. But by what proportion? Will it limit the bonus to 0.8% as the calculation formula suggests? Or push it symbolically up to 1% knowing that any increase in the rate of the Livret has a high cost for the coffers of the State. Bercy, which has control over this decision, could just as well limit it to 0.6%, for example. But not sure that the executive wants to put himself behind millions of savers.

No boost, warns Castex
