While Android 12 has not even arrived on most smartphones, there are now the first leaks about the successor Android 13. The version of the operating system, internally known as “Tiramisu”, seems to bring a number of exciting functions with it.
While the rollout of Android 12 is picking up speed and Android 12L is just around the corner, development for the next big version, Android 13 “Tiramisu”, is in progress. Now we have an early first look at some of the changes to come.
The colleagues from xda-developers got their hands on an early version of Android 13 “Tiramisu” and found four notable changes in the version. Given that we are still a few months away from a developer preview, there is a very good chance that the look and feel and many of the changes we have seen so far could be removed or changed. Still, it’s interesting to see what Google has in the works.
One of the biggest user-centric changes to be found in this early build is the ability for Android 13 to set different languages for different apps on the device. An “App Language” setting enables the language to be adapted for each individual app. The option seems to be for those who speak multiple languages. Currently, Android defines a system-wide language that the apps should follow.

Android 13: More freedom with the lock screen
Another user-centric feature in Android 13 seems to be the ability to change the clock on the lock screen. With this feature, which many had wanted in Android 12, users can set the clock on the lock screen to always appear on a single line instead of switching to a large, two-line, square layout like in Android 12, if there are no notifications. It is mentioned that this could show up in Android 12L.
Additionally, Android 13’s design is practically identical to Android 12’s, which is not at all surprising given the schedule. However, there are a few other changes for developers that have been discovered. There’s a new permission for apps to send notifications, suggesting that this upcoming platform update could make notifications an opt-in for all apps. It is noteworthy that Samsung implemented something similar in Android 12 / One UI 4. It also appears that Google is making some changes to the “Android Resource Economy” that would better optimize tasks on the device based on the battery level.
