Noah and Mia – no other names were given in Switzerland in 2020 often forgiven. There are two long-running hits that have been at the top of the first name statistics several times. Closely followed by Liam, Matteo and Leon as well as Emma, Mila and Emilia. These are all popular names for newborns.
But these are not (yet) the names that appear most frequently in Switzerland – others make the running here. The most common male name is Daniel. 62,691 people will be called that in 2020. With women, it’s Maria. The name occurs 79,405 times.
Which names are the least popular in Switzerland?
Since 1976 the female first name Josette is practically no longer chosen, like a graphic by “Watson” shows. But the name doesn’t go away immediately. In 2020 there were still 1980 Josettes in Switzerland. Hildegard and Hedwig are also slowly but surely disappearing.
Brigitte and Margrit are also very unpopular for babies today. In the 1950s, Brigitte was once the second most popular maiden name in Switzerland after Maria.
Jda experienced the biggest slump. In 2015, 112 women were called that, five years later only 61. No first name disappears faster in this country, as “Watson” reports. However, it depends on the spelling. Ida also went out of style for a while, but has seen a boom again in recent years.
Hans-Peter and Uwe are the men’s most threatened names
For 34 years, Hans-Peter was only awarded twice a year. It is therefore the most threatened male name in Switzerland. Closely followed by Uwe and Herbert.
They have practically not been elected since the turn of the millennium. But there are still some men with that name in Switzerland. In 2020 there were 1948 Hans-Peter, 1532 Uwes and 1440 Hansruedis in Switzerland. So you will not immediately disappear from the scene. (gin)
