This is the “fish doorbell”

A doorbell for fish – which sounds a bit crazy, is a Dutch invention to help fish get through a lock upstream. The goal is a local canal near Utrecht. The bell was set up there by the city council and the water board De Stichtse Rijnlanden.

Through a website, the fish doorbell be actuated. Via a live stream showing the area in front of the lock, people can follow whether fish want to pass through the lock. If this is the case, a red button can be pressed. Every spring, various fish swim from the Vecht via the Oudegracht and the canals to the Kromme Rijn and have to go through the middle of Utrecht and a 200-year-old lock on their way to the spawning grounds.

Otherwise, the sluice will not open often enough for the fish to pass through without problems. If a fish swims past the underwater camera, press . With a quick look at the live stream, 300 other people were also watching and a fish even swam past – a perch. There is most of that here. It’s even a little relaxing to look into the dark green of the camera and wait for fish to swim by.
