The old age and care center “dr Heimä” in Giswil OW has five corona deaths to complain about – within two weeks. Therefore, the home is temporarily closed, as the home announces on its homepage.
But how did that happen?
According to the managing director Daniel Kiefer, there are vaccination breakthroughs behind this. After all, almost all residents have been vaccinated twice for a long time, as the home boss told the «Lucerne newspaper” explained. However, he does not know how the canton counts the deaths related to Covid-19.
Nursing staff did not wear masks in the summer
In any case, the cantonal health department assures that these are laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 cases. The cause of death would be determined in each individual case by the treating doctor, says Oliver Gerber, head of the Obwalden health department, as quoted in the “Luzerner Zeitung”.
If you have any questions about vaccination protection, the health department refers you to the Swissmedic licensing office. It is therefore unclear whether the five deaths are unequivocally vaccine breakthroughs.

As the “Luzerner Zeitung” writes, the staff in the retirement and nursing home refrained from wearing masks during the summer. Managing Director Kiefer justified this with the fact that the situation at the time would have allowed this.
Bad understanding with face mask
The waiver of masks had been agreed with the residents. Especially since most older people have their problems with the face mask. So the acoustic understanding of the residents with mask was not given. However, a face mask was always put on when the situation required it.
According to Oliver Gerber, outbreak management would currently be used to curb the spread of the virus. This is done using tests, contact tracing and quarantine. There are currently no residents of the retirement and nursing home in hospital care. (oco)
