Plastic hunting obliges, the gourd has become an everyday object, useful but also aesthetic, which sits near the computer or on the desk. But because there are a thousand and one ways to hydrate, Séverine Charbonnel and Florence Le Maux had the idea of offering juices, infusions, syrups, broths in a pretty illustrated book (What gourds!Studiobook, 144 pages, 16 euros), full of tips and original recipes (80!) shared by taste lovers, chefs, authors, herbalists, beekeepers… The plus: a clever glossary and drawings to understand the difference between infusion, decoction, maceration, syrup or hydrosol and not to stay gourds!
good morning syrup
A sugar-free recipe from editor Raphaèle Dorniol, an amateur pastry chef. To be enjoyed during morning meetings, to wake up gently.
For 1 liter
Preparation: 5 minutes
Cooking: 5 minutes
Infusion: 1 night
Ingredients :
- 2 organic lemons
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ginger powder
- 1 star anise
The day before: squeeze the lemons. Pour the juice into a saucepan and heat. Stop the heat at the first boil. Add the star anise and the powdered spices. To mix together. Cover the pot and let steep overnight.
The same day: remove the star anise, pour the “syrup” into your flask. Fill up with water in a 260 ml bottle for a fairly concentrated drink, or a 500 ml bottle if you want to dilute it further and sip it all morning.
The warming infusion
When the temperatures drop, and in these times of energy sobriety, drinking hot is comforting. Beena Paradin Migotto, author of a Spice Atlas (Flammarion, 2021), offers a simple infusion, which in decoction version is also a good remedy for the common cold.
For 1 liter
Preparation: 5 minutes
Cooking: 5 to 10 minutes
Brew: 5 minutes
Ingredients :
- 4 cardamom pods
- 1 peppercorn
- 1 liter of water
- 1 C. teaspoon ginger powder or 1 piece of fresh ginger
Infusion version: in a mortar, coarsely crush the cardamom and pepper. Boil 1 liter of water and infuse all the ingredients for 5 minutes in hot water. Filter and fill your bottle.
Decoction version: boil for 10 minutes cardamom, pepper and ginger powder in 1 liter of water.
Sip from your 1 liter insulated flask throughout the day.
