The bathing season does not start until June at many European beach resorts. With a lot of luck, it can be wonderfully warm before that, but also too cool for a beach holiday. In Mallorca, for example, the average temperatures in May are 17 degrees, in Sicily and on the Croatian coast around 18 degrees. That’s why we suggest five destinations that can also be reached in a few hours’ flight, but have reliable bathing temperatures on water and on land.

1. Cyprus: The island with beauty, love and sun guarantee

The bathing season has already begun in Cyprus: Due to its location south of the Turkish Riviera, the third-largest island in the Mediterranean is blessed with an eternally long summer that lasts from March to November. In May, daily temperatures of 24 to 30 degrees prevail on the coasts – with ten hours of sunshine. At night the thermometer moves around 20 degrees. In the south, the sea lures with up to 25 degrees, in the west and north the water has around 22 degrees.

In short: The climate is not yet as hot as in July and August and therefore perfect for outdoor activities and relaxing beach units. And in spring the island is not yet overcrowded.

2. Egypt: White sandy beaches and dream temperatures

Not a drop of rain, twelve hours of sun a day, maximum temperatures of up to 34 degrees and water temperatures of around 24 degrees: the popular bathing destination of Egypt can be reached in around five hours by flight. Subtropical desert climate gives the North African country a wonderfully warm climate in spring (and also in autumn). The Red Sea coast is dotted with bathing resorts and kilometers of white sandy beaches: from El Queseir, Makadi Bay, Sharm el Sheikh, Lahami Bay or Marsa Alam to the well-known beach classic Hurghada.

They all score in May with average daily values of almost 30 degrees, the Red Sea has between 23 and 25 degrees. The underwater world is also a reason to cheer. Even snorkelers can see many colorful fish on the coral reefs off the coast. There are good wind conditions for windsurfers and kitesurfers in May. From June, the temperatures move to extreme heights – more than 40 degrees are not uncommon.

3. Djerba: South Sea feeling on the Mediterranean

Only a three-hour flight from Germany to the east coast of Tunisia: Djerba is one of the quickest destinations to reach in May when it comes to maximum sun and sand. The flat island off the Tunisian coast is also known as the “South Pacific dream in the Mediterranean” because of its white beaches, the turquoise sea and the many palm trees.

One of the most popular beaches is called Sidi Mahréz. Here the sun smiles down from the sky for twelve hours and brings temperatures between 23 and 27 degrees. With an average of 20 degrees, but often even 22 degrees, the sea offers the opportunity to refresh yourself. Holidays in Djerba in May have a big advantage: Many activities such as cycling, beach volleyball or beach walks are really fun now, because it is much too hot for that in summer.

4. Agadir: The special bay on the Atlantic

In the southwest of Morocco lies the country’s most important bathing destination – the white city of Agadir with its ten-kilometer-long, golden and crescent-shaped sandy beach. Its major advantage is that it is located in a bay on the Atlantic Ocean, brushed by the warm Gulf Stream. This makes Agadir the sunniest place in Morocco – 320 days a year.

For the month of May this means: ideal beach weather with around 26 degrees and twelve hours of sunshine. The sea temperature is about 21 degrees. But just hanging out on the beach is almost a shame. In addition to the cozy cafés, restaurants and bars on the waterfront, there are a number of interesting places to discover: from the Bahia Palace and a botanical garden to the Saadian Tombs and the Koutoubia Mosque. By the way: The flight time from Germany is about four hours.

5. Cape Verde: The insider tip among the sand and sun paradises

Good news for sun worshipers: May (like June) is one of the best months to visit the Cape Verde Islands. The 15 islands in the middle of the Atlantic, nine of which are inhabited, are a six-hour flight from us. There, south of the Canary Islands and around 500 kilometers off the west coast of Africa near Senegal, the sun shines 350 days a year – from January to June not a single drop of rain falls.

In May, air temperatures around 26 degrees and ten hours of sun as well as water temperatures of more than 21 degrees offer fantastic beach conditions. The most beautiful beaches are on the islands of Sal and Boavista. Praia Maria is the name of the wide sandy beach at the southernmost point of Sal. Only two kilometers to the west is the beach of Ponta Preta, which is known for its sand dunes, but also for surfers. On the island of Boa Vista, where the singer and Grammy award winner Cesária Évora was born, the 22-kilometer-long Praia Santa Monica is considered the ultimate dream beach.
