There will be a big change at BVB in the coming season: Marco Reus is no longer captain of the German runners-up. After five years in office, he gives up the bandage, he says in a video. And he gives the sports management a wish to take with them.

Borussia Dortmund’s longtime captain Marco Reus will no longer be captain of the German soccer runners-up next season. “I had a lot of time to think on vacation and decided to pass on the captain’s armband,” said Reus in a video shared by BVB on social media. The 34-year-old said he informed coach Edin Terzic and sports director Sebastian Kehl the day before. “I was proud to wear this captain’s armband for five years and it was a great honor,” said Reus. He wishes Kehl and Terzic “that they find a very, very good successor. I am very sure of that”.

Reus recently had no regular place at BVB. In the last Bundesliga season, the native of Dortmund was involved in 25 games and was in the starting line-up 14 times. The offensive player scored six goals in the league.

The native of Dortmund was particularly controversial as captain, because he often did not play a decisive role in important games. He recently extended his contract by a year. According to media reports, the fact that the club’s management is aiming for a generational change should already have been an issue during the negotiations.

Several players are being traded as candidates for the captaincy at BVB. For example, defenders Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, as well as six Emre Can and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel are possible. Game designer Julian Brandt should also be given more responsibility in the planning. BVB starts the new competitive season with the cup game at Schott Mainz on August 12th.
