Fixed costs too high – hut closes in winter due to energy costs

Bad news for everyone who likes to hike on the Feuerkogel in winter. The popular Christophorushütte will not be open this year – so nothing with a rustic hut flair at 1593 meters above sea level.

The innkeepers Sandra Peitli and Andreas Dengg explain the reason for this on Facebook. “The decision not to open in the winter season does not come from a whim, not because we are not comfortable or because we do not want to work or because we are lazy,” they write. And then they explain the background. Especially in the winter season, the costs for heating (there are 13 outdated night storage heaters available), electricity, rent and staff can no longer be financed. A hut is by no means a gold mine. They also explain that there are pictures of full guest gardens wear in the sunshine. “Unfortunately, just because the guest garden is full when the weather is good doesn’t mean it’s a gold mine. When the weather is bad, no one comes, and many people often forget that,” write the two tenants, who only took over the Christophorushütte in May 2022 with a lot of love and enthusiasm. Concentrating fully on summerBut of course they won’t give up. Rather, they want to concentrate entirely on the summer. In the future, the focus will be on “events such as weddings, weddings, birthday parties or even team building.” The Alpine Association shows how difficult it is to find hut owners: They are looking for eleven tenants.
