Bouygues Telecom has grown steadily since the start of the year, notes nPerf. “It offers the best upload speed and the best latency on average over the quarter. Although Free still holds first place on average download speed over the quarter, Bouygues Telecom finished strong by overtaking its competitor in May and June” specifies nPerf.
And this dynamic is a long-term one. This trend, which is found on both broadband and very high speed, dates back to 2021.
“Free’s lead is melting away”
Something to worry about other operators. “Free’s lead in downlink speed is melting away and Bouygues Telecom even managed to take the lead over the last month by offering its very high-speed customers, on average, a downlink speed approaching 400 Mb/s” specifies nPerf.
Bouygues Telecom and Free obtained, during the first half of 2023, the best nPerf score on the performance of “Very High Speed” connections.
In 2022, Free was positioned at the top of Very High Speed. But the efforts of Bouygues Telecom have since paid off. Bouygues Telecom is the leader or co-leader in two indicators, upload speed and latency, and overtook Free in June in downlink speed.
In the end, Bouygues Telecom and Free totaled a statistically similar nPerf score on the THD segment.
On the broadband side too, Bouygues Telecom is changing the game
On the broadband side, after several fairly stable semesters, Bouygues Telecom is changing the situation and again taking first place in the ranking.
Bouygues Telecom subscribers obtained, during the first half of 2023, the best nPerf scores on the performance of “Broadband” connections.
Bouygues Telecom is also on par here with Free on download speed, but takes a clear advantage on latency by operating a drop of more than 5ms compared to the same half of last year.
Free maintains a clear lead on upstream throughput
Free, for its part, maintains a clear lead and its first place on the amount of data. Orange and SFR bring up the rear with performances very similar to those observed last year.
Note that there is also movement at the bottom of the ranking. “SFR has been able to improve the quality of its network, offering its customers higher throughput and latency compared to the previous year,” notes nPerf. This growth enabled it to overtake Orange at the end of the semester.
Improved upload and download speeds
In addition, the study specifies that the French surfed with an average download speed of 271 Mb/s, compared to 225 Mb/s in the first half of 2022, i.e. a growth of around +20%.
Free subscribers benefited this semester from the best download speed, all fixed Internet technologies combined.
Its increase of +19% (+50 Mb/s) since the first half of 2023 confirms its role as leader. But Bouygues Telecom, second, is catching up with growth twice as fast as that of free (36%), bringing it closer to its main competitor. Orange and SFR retain their respective third and fourth positions from last year.
The upload rate is also growing. Its average speed is up to 197 Mb / s, an increase of 23% compared to 2022, with increases ranging from 23 and 89 Mb / s additional, according to the operators.

The expansion of the fleet of domestic offers theoretically offering 10 Gb/s contributes significantly to this improvement (read: GPON, 10G-EPON or XGS-PON, a definition in one click).
Latency that also improves
Finally, it should be noted that the average latency was 20 ms over the period, an increase of 10% compared to 2022.

Bouygues Telecom has significantly reduced latency on its network, in particular thanks to the sharp drop observed on Very High Speed. SFR, although last on this indicator, also saw its latency drop during this semester, unlike Orange.
The half-year barometer of fixed connections in mainland France is based on tests carried out during the period from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023 by nPerf. 1,951,930 connection tests were carried out for this.
