The US Supreme Court will decide the fate of Donald Trump. Judge Alito will be one of them, although two incidents involving flags being raised suggest that he is a supporter of the president. He denies this, saying that his wife is to blame. He is impartial.
The criticized US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito does not want to recuse himself from cases involving former President Donald Trump. In a letter to members of Congress, Alito wrote that the controversy surrounding flags flying over his houses did not require him to recuse himself. He therefore rejected a request to do so.
Recently, media reports surfaced that a US flag was flying upside down over the judge’s home in Virginia in 2021. Last year, a flag with the words “Appeal to Heaven” was also hoisted over his beach house in New Jersey. In both cases, his wife hung the flags, Alito explained. Both flags are used by ultra-right Christians and Trump supporters, which raised doubts about the judge’s neutrality.
Alito said he did not know the upside-down flag was flying over his house until it was brought to his attention. “As soon as I saw it, I asked my wife to take it down, but she refused for several days,” he wrote in nearly identical letters to Democrats in the House and Senate.
The Supreme Court is currently reviewing two cases related to the attack by Trump supporters on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021. They concern charges against the rioters and the question of whether Trump enjoys immunity from prosecution on charges of election interference.
