Flashdance: 1980s cult film returns as a series

The 1980s cult film "Flashdance" returns as a series. Original producer Lynda Obst is involved in the production for Paramount +.

She was one of the style icons of the 1980s: the dance-loving welder Alex Owens in the cult film "Flashdance" (1983). The boyish curly hair with the sexy stylings was embodied by the then 20-year-old US actress Jennifer Beals (56, "The L Word"). Now the dance and music film is getting a series reboot, as "The Hollywood Reporter" reports.

According to this, original producer Lynda Obst (70) will also lead this production for the streaming service Paramount +. Angela Robinson, 49, "True Blood" will lead executive producer and director. The script for the pilot episode is written by Tracy McMillan (56, "Mad Man").

This is what serial adaptation is all about

Not too much is known about the content of the new series. Just this much: "A young black woman with ballet dreams who works in a strip club is struggling to find her place in the world". The industry magazine mentions "romance, money, art, friendship and self-love" as additional keywords. In the original film, Alex Owens, a young woman from Pittsburgh who works as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night, dreams of going to ballet school.

Three big awards for the original title track

The title track "Flashdance … What a Feeling" (1983) by Irene Cara (61), composed by Giorgio Moroder (80) and Keith Forsey (72), won three important prizes in 1984: Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy .

Director Adrian Lyne's (72) film was also a surprise hit at the box office. It grossed US $ 92.9 million in the United States and more than US $ 200 million worldwide. In the US, "Flashdance" posted the third highest sales of the year after "Tootsie" (1982) and "Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi" (1983).
