Flood danger – Lungau: Civil defense alarm triggered in Tamsweg

The country warns the population of Tamsweg: The civil defense alarm was triggered. The Leißnitzbach is flooded. The Tamsweger are asked to stay in the houses and avoid underground garages and basements. In addition, the population should stay away from the banks and bridges. An emergency vehicle also had an accident in Ramingstein after an allegedly washed-out road had given way. Six firefighters were injured.

The great danger at the moment: driftwood could block the flow – then the Leißnitzbach could overflow. At around 12:20 p.m., Tamsweg Mayor Georg Gappmayer was able to make a cautiously optimistic forecast. He says: “Currently it looks as if the situation is easing. The levels are declining, but we remain on the alert.” So far, there has only been a blockage in the area of the market, which could be quickly eliminated. “The stream burst its banks and flooded several cellars,” says Gappmayer. However, the material damage was probably manageable and no one was injured. Around 1:30 p.m., further trouble threatened from the south. “We expect it to start raining again in the next hour, because precipitation is already falling again in neighboring Carinthia,” explains District Fire Brigade Commander Hannes Pfeifenberger. Heavy equipment has currently been stationed on the bridges in order to be able to quickly clear any blockages.Situation in Ramingstein eases, fire engine crashesThe mayor also reports that the situation in Ramingstein, which was also badly affected by the storms, has eased. “The weather has calmed down,” said local boss Leonhard Kocher. During the storm, a fire engine from the Ramingstein fire department had an accident when the road broke away under the heavy fire engine. “Six comrades were injured,” confirms District Fire Brigade Commander Hannes Pfeifenberger. Two of those involved had broken ribs, the other four suffered only minor injuries. The firefighters were all able to save themselves from the damaged vehicle and were then taken to the hospital by the rescue service. The investigations into the cause of the accident are currently underway, according to Pfeifenberger. “But the only important thing at the moment is that the comrades get well again quickly,” emphasizes Pfeifenberger. Already on Tuesday evening, a strong thunderstorm caused damage and mudslides in the Lungau. Especially in Ramingstein there were several mudflows. The fire brigade had their hands full with the clean-up work. The fire brigades of the district were last deployed with around 350 emergency services. There were mudslides in Ramingstein in the area of the Murtalbahn and also in Göriach. Both the B96 and the B95 are currently blocked in parts.NOTE: This article is continuously updated!
