Amazon is expanding its workforce in the US and Canada on a large scale in the coronavirus crisis. The Internet company announced in a blog entry that 100,000 new, regular full-time and part-time jobs would be created. Amazon wants to expand its presence in this area. Amazon says it offers its new employees a starting wage of at least $ 15 an hour. That's more than double the US federal minimum wage of $ 7.25. However, some states, cities and municipalities in the USA have their own minimum wage regulations. For example, the minimum wage in the Amazon hometown of Seattle for companies with 501 employees or more is $ 16.39 an hour.

175,000 new employees already hired in spring

Amazon said it was offering registration bonuses of up to $ 1,000 in selected cities. In addition, the company attracts full-time employees with additional benefits, including health insurance, parental leave and a company pension scheme.

Since the corona-related restrictions, Amazon has booked orders on an unprecedented scale. In March and April, 175,000 additional employees were hired in warehouses. 125,000 of them got the promise in May that they could stay permanently. Last week, Amazon announced 33,000 open positions in administration and technology.

Including short-term employees who are run as seasonal employees, Amazon has more than a million employees around the world. There are more than 600,000 permanent employees in the United States, more than 100,000 of whom are in corporate functions.
