As part of its Business Segment Meeting 2023, Sony returned to the case of the PlayStation VR2.
The VR headset reserved for the PS5 has been available since February 22, and we now know its sales volume.
PS VR 2: a more positive launch than expected?
Obviously, this PS VR2 headset has been the subject of a complete test in the columns of Clubic. For its new device dedicated to virtual reality, Sony had initially made the bet to market its PS VR2 through its web store only. It’s only been a few days since the helmet is available from other brands.
This decision raises certain questions about the commercial success of this new PS VR2, which has also received mixed returns, in addition to its price set at 599 euros. However, despite these black spots, it seems that the helmet has managed to find the road to success, with even a significantly better start than that of its predecessor.
Over 600,000 VR2 PS in the wild
Indeed, according to the sales figures communicated by Sony and stopped at the beginning of April, the PS VR2 sold 600,000 copies. This start exceeds by 8% that of the first PS VR launched in October 2016. We are rather far from the announced commercial disaster, especially since Sony has still sold a few additional units between the beginning of April and today.
It remains to be seen now what future the manufacturer reserves for its new virtual reality headset, knowing that it has promised to invest ever more money in the development of new franchises, including of course for the VR section.
Carried at its launch by Horizon: Call of the Mountain, the Japanese giant’s VR headset will (hopefully) benefit from new arguments very soon. The PlayStation Showcase tonight at 10 p.m. (Paris time) may provide some initial answers.
Finally, when it comes to the PS5, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan confirmed that over 38.4 million PS5s have been distributed worldwide, including 36 million sold to gamers. Between January and March 2023, Sony had distributed a record volume of 6.3 million machines.
Also, and for a few weeks already, it is now possible to discover PS5s on sale in many major stores, something absolutely unthinkable just a few months ago.
