“Flurona”: a case of double infection with Covid-19 and influenza detected in Israel

According to the authorities, there are other cases of this double infection. Analyzes are underway to assess the dangerousness of this disease

According to local media, a first case of “Flurona” has been identified in Israel. This disease is a double infection that mixes Covid-19 and influenza. “The Times of Israel” reported that the first patient to be infected was an unvaccinated pregnant woman with mild symptoms of difficulty breathing. The young woman was released from Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva on Thursday, December 30. But it would not be the very first case detected in the world. The local media claim that cases of “Flurona” had already been observed in the United States in 2020.

Experts are now studying the combination of the two infections to see if it could cause more serious illness. The Israeli health authorities have thus launched analyzes and an investigation. The Ministry of Health has expressed concern that it will have to deal with two epidemics at the same time.

Other probable infections

Israel has seen an increase in the number of influenza cases in recent weeks, with nearly 2,000 people hospitalized. This increase added to the number of Covid-19 cases raises fears of a massive influx of patients in hospitals. Last winter, those fears did not materialize due to health restrictions that have curbed flu cases. But this year is different, with lighter restrictions.

Health officials have said it is likely that others have been infected with the two viruses, but they have yet to be diagnosed.
