May 2023 was marked by the arrival of new players on the electric vehicle market. While Tesla maintains its dominant position with its Model Y, promising new models are emerging. From BYD’s Atto 3 family SUV, to the controversial Peugeot e-308, to the impressive Smart #1, resulting from the Mercedes-Benz and Geely collaboration, we present to you these new entries in the booming car market. electrical.
In May 2023, Tesla maintains its leading position with the Model Y, Fiat follows with the electric 500, while the Peugeot e-208 is preparing for a small update. But what attracts attention are the models that have just entered the market.
BYD, Smart, Toyota, Peugeot…
Among the new registrations in May 2023, BYD, China’s largest automaker, registered 60 Atto 3s. In the novelties that BYD brings this year, the Atto 3 family compact SUV probably stands out as the model with the most potential.
This compact family SUV, measuring 4.46 m long, challenges the Volkswagen ID.4, Kia Niro EV, Nissan Ariya and other MG ZS, even a certain Tesla Model Y and the Renault Mégane E-Tech.
The car is promising, but it didn’t quite convince us: the infotainment system doesn’t live up to the Chinese reputation, the price isn’t competitive enough, and on-road performance is limited. However, the finish and the quality of presentation are top notch, and the equipment is extremely complete.
The new Peugeot e-308 is also making its appearance. We haven’t had the opportunity to test it yet, but it was talked about in May.
Peugeot positioned its price just above 47,000 euros, to finally offer a small discount in order to calm the controversy that followed.
The Smart #1, for its part, has both German and Chinese DNA. The result of a collaboration between the German Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese Geely (owner of Volvo, Lotus, Polestar, etc.), this Smart #1 is very similar to the Zeekr X and the Volvo EX30.
It is a small 100% electric SUV based on a dedicated platform called SAE (Sustainable Experience Architecture).
We liked this product a lot, a well thought out and well made proposal. The Brabus version has nothing to envy Tesla in terms of performance: 428 hp with two motors for all-wheel drive.
Then there’s the Lexus RZ 450e. We have not yet had the opportunity to test this SUV, which is the technical cousin of the new Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra.
Finally, the BYD Tang… in only 2 copies. Another SUV… quite gigantic. Its technical data sheet is somewhat disappointing, since the 86.4 kWh battery only allows the SUV to travel only 400 km!
Its weight (2.5 tons) and its huge 22-inch rims do not help to reduce consumption! However, we are waiting to test it before making a final judgment.
As you can see, the dynamics of the electric car market continue to evolve with the arrival of these new models. This promises an increasingly intense and interesting competition.
