Aldi-Nord raises prices again because of the Ukraine war

The Ukraine war is not only driving up energy prices noticeably, food is also becoming significantly more expensive. The discounter Aldi-Nord will once again raise its prices for many products, Aldi-Süd could follow. Other retailers are following suit.
Due to sharply increased costs, the discounter Aldi increased prices again on Monday. Meat, sausage and butter would be “significantly more expensive,” said Aldi Nord communications chief Florian Scholbeck in Essen. The reason for this is the higher prices that Aldi has to pay its suppliers. “Since the start of the Ukraine war, there have been jumps in purchase prices that we have never seen before.” This is also due to the fact that feed, fertilizer and energy have become more expensive. This in turn would have felt the farmers in their livestock and the meat processing industry.
The “WAZ” had previously reported. According to the newspaper, Aldi Süd also feels compelled to raise prices. The increases vary depending on the product. The discounter is by no means alone in its approach – on the contrary. Because Germany’s consumers have to dig deeper into their pockets than before at other discounters and in supermarkets.
Aldi already increased the prices for around 160 items two weeks ago, and a week later another 20 items went up. Competitors followed suit. Due to the situation on the world markets, “rising sales prices in the entire industry […] can’t always be avoided,” said Edeka last week, for example. According to a recently published survey by the Ifo Institute, almost all companies in Germany’s food retail trade are planning price increases.
