Apple isn’t officially working on a foldable iPhone or iPad. Nevertheless, an analyst claims to have already learned an interesting detail about the outer display of a foldable Apple device. This should save a lot of electricity.
Analyst: Apple is testing color e-ink display
Apple continues to keep a low profile when it comes to a first foldable iPhone or iPad. While the Android competition from Samsung in particular is a few steps ahead here, nothing is officially heard from Apple to the exciting topic. If Apple analysts Ming-Chi Kuo have their way, then at least one detail is certain.
Kuo reports that Apple is internally working on a colored e-ink display works (source: Ming Chi Kuo on Twitter). The monochrome variant of this type of display is known from e-book readers. At Apple, a colored version could possibly be called external display of a folding smartphone to serve. While the main display inside can be opened, the outside is not flexible.
Otherwise, e-ink displays are mainly used where saved a lot of electricity shall be. It could make sense as a second small display, since depending on the type, only notifications and the time are displayed here. Apple would therefore take a completely different path than the manufacturers of existing folding cell phones – although the folding cell phone Galaxy Z Flip 3 only has a small external display.

E-ink display at Apple: Less power, more runtime
E Ink displays have both advantages and disadvantages. They require significantly less power, which is the case with a folding smartphone with a longer battery life should make noticeable. On the downside, they’re limited in performance and don’t come close to high refresh rate OLED displays. With a second display attached to the outside, however, this can be tolerable.
