China calls on citizens to hamster
China has suffered severe flooding in the past two years, which has damaged harvests. Now the corona numbers are rising again, to which the government reacts with hard lockdowns. Citizens should prepare for bottlenecks and store things for daily needs.
Against the background of increasingly strict corona restrictions, the Chinese government has called for stocks of essential products to be built up. Families should “store a certain amount of goods for daily needs and emergencies,” said a statement on the Ministry of Commerce’s website late on Monday evening.
The ministry did not provide any specific information on possible food shortages or disruptions in supply chains due to the corona measures. However, it called on the authorities to take measures to boost agricultural production, maintain supply chains and ensure that there are sufficient regional food reserves. Prices should also be kept stable.
In addition to the aftermath of the corona pandemic, China has been hit by severe flooding in the past two years, affecting agricultural yields and driving up prices. There are fears that the problem could be exacerbated by extreme weather events caused by climate change.
Although the daily corona infections in China were in the low double-digit range for a long time due to strict measures during the pandemic, they have recently increased again. 92 new cases were registered on Monday – the highest value since mid-September. The government in Beijing is also taking rigorous action against new outbreaks because of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in February.
