Football club money ranking: FC Bayern is number three in Europe

Football Club Money Ranking
FC Bayern is number three in Europe

According to a study, FC Bayern Munich ranks third among the top-selling football clubs in Europe. The record champions only have to admit defeat to two clubs from Spain in the ranking. In addition to Bayern, three other Bundesliga clubs have made it into the top 20.

The corona pandemic has left its mark on the financially strongest football clubs. According to calculations by the auditing and consulting company Deloitte, the 20 top clubs with the highest turnover achieved total revenues of 8.2 billion euros in the 2019/20 season. That was twelve percent less than in the previous season, when a record high of 9.3 billion euros had been reached.

That emerges from the Deloitte report "Football Money League". The main reasons given for the decline were the lower media revenues (minus 23 percent) and the extensive loss of matchday income (minus 17 percent).

In the money list, four Bundesliga clubs are among the top 20 for the first time in seven years. The German record champions FC Bayern improved from fourth to third place behind FC Barcelona and Spanish champions Real Madrid. Borussia Dortmund stayed in twelfth place, Schalke 04 slipped from 15th to 16th. Eintracht Frankfurt is at the fore for the first time. The Hessians moved up seven places to position 20.

The Bundesliga clubs also had to accept a drop in income, but this was moderate compared to other clubs. For example, the Champions League winner from Munich had collected 660.1 million euros as German Croesus 2018/19, in the past season sales slipped by four percent to 634.1 million euros.

For comparison: FC Barcelona remained at the top with 715.1 million euros, but the minus of 125.7 million euros (sales 2018/19: 840.8 million euros) was the second largest decrease with a minus of almost 15 percent among the top 20 clubs.
