In front of their home crowd, the English won in extra time against Germany in the final of the Women’s Euro 2022. They won the competition for the first time in their history and even won a first international title for English football since 1966, men and women together.

At Wembley, the Lionesses triumphed. In front of more than 87,000 spectators, England beat Germany in the final of the Women’s Euro (2-1 AP) and won the competition for the first time in its history. Sarina Wiegman’s players had to wait until extra time to fly to the title.

After a closed and hotly contested first period, the English capsized the stadium for the first time thanks to a fabulous ball stung by Ella Toone (62nd), who came into play a few minutes earlier. But just over 10 minutes from the end of regulation time, the German Lina Magull resets the counters by perfectly cutting a cross at the near post.

A first title for English football in 56 years

The score will remain there at the end of the 90 minutes and it is therefore necessary to wait for extra time to witness the outcome of this final. At the end of the suspense, after 110 minutes of effort, it is indeed the English who will force fate. Chloe Kelly tears herself away in the area to score the winning goal with her right foot, synonymous with deliverance.

England therefore won its very first international title since 1966, men and women alike. Opposite, Germany, faller of the France team in the semi-finals, aimed for a 9th European coronation but had to deal with the package of its star striker, Alexandra Popp, victim of “muscle problems” in the warm-up.
