Football player dies two weeks after mass brawl on pitch

US police are investigating the death of a 29-year-old football player, who died two weeks after a general fight during a match.

On July 10, a rare scene took place in Oxnard, California. That day, between 100 and 200 people took part in a general fight on a football pitch. The incident opposed the players of the two teams but also spectators present, indicates NBC News. Among the protagonists of this outburst of violence was Misael Sanchez, a 29-year-old player, who died Monday morning, two weeks after the events. Commander Alex Arnett, quoted by the American channel, explained that the young athlete had no signs of injury on him.

On the other hand, a press release explained that when help and police arrived on July 10, Misael Sanchez was “unconscious and not breathing”. He was taken to hospital where he was in critical condition. It is the results of the autopsy which should make it possible to establish the official causes of his death. Is it related to the fight or did he feel unwell? “We know that he was involved in a fight but we cannot say at this time if this fight caused the death of the victim,” he said.

The Oxnard Police Department has asked for the public’s assistance, calling on anyone with information or video of the event to come forward. Witnesses said the fight started between the two teams after a dispute over the referee’s decision. While on the field, Misael Sanchez was allegedly attacked by several people. One of the alleged attackers, a 46-year-old man, was identified and then arrested as he tried to leave the scene. While waiting for the investigation to continue, the victim’s family has opened an online kitty. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, Misael Sanchez. My family is heartbroken and can’t believe it, as we expected a bright future for him. Misael was assaulted by multiple assailants on July 10, 2022 and left in critical condition. We weren’t ready for this kind of goodbye,” it read.
