This Sunday in the Scottish Cup, the Glasgow Rangers gave us a real moment of fair play by allowing the players of Partick Thistle Football Club to score following a controversial goal.

These are images that you don’t see every day. In the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, Glasgow Rangers, second in the Scottish championship, faced Partick Thistle Football Club, a club in the Scottish second division. And while the score was 1-1 on the hour mark, Malik Tillman went to press the opposing defender as he was about to return the ball to his team after a foul. He then managed to deceive the opposing goalkeeper to give his team the advantage.

A rogue action that did not please his opponents at all. Very upset, the second division players let the scorer and the referee know. Not proud of the goal his team had just scored, Rangers coach Michael Beale asked his players to let the opposing team score as compensation.

The rangers, fair play and winning

The whole Rangers team therefore froze at the kick-off after the goal to let Scott Tiffoney cross the field and equalize. A gesture applauded by the Partick Thistle Football Club coach: “I’ve been in football since 1981 and I’ve never seen anything like it before. I bear no grudge against him. Class has kind of disappeared from football in general lately, but Michael Beale showed it today. It reflects very well what this football club is and himself as a man.Despite this equalizer, Rangers won late in the game with a goal from James Sands.

After the meeting, Michael Beale insisted on explaining his decision: “It was the right thing to do. Malik Tillman is a fantastic young player and I don’t want that to go through his head. He has never cheated on anyone in his life and as a football club we have high standards. For everything I want to defend as a club and what I want to defend as a man, I would not have allowed it. Yes, it could have been risky, but we don’t want to win like that.»
