footballers awaiting a possible legal battle

Many voices have already protested against the prospect of a Super League. A competition that some major European football clubs intend to launch between themselves, ” as soon as possible “, rather than continuing to share Champions League recipes with others.

So many voices, except those of the main stakeholders. The footballers concerned were careful not to comment before the formalization of this project, on the night of Sunday 18 to Monday 19 April, by twelve secessionist formations (three Spanish, three Italian and six English).

If the dislocation comes to an end, for example from next season, these footballers risk being in the middle of a legal battle. Because the European Union of Football Associations (UEFA) has reiterated its threat: in a press release dated April 18, the governing body of European football warned sportsmen that they “Could be denied the opportunity to represent their national team” in the event of participation in the Super League.

Could the sanction take effect from the next European Championship (Euro 2021), supposed to start in June in various countries? Or from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar? The question interests the French team, and in particular its players employed at FC Barcelona, Manchester United or Real Madrid. It would still be necessary, first, to know the inaugural calendar of the Super League.

“The European treaties defend the idea of competition”

Ultimately, if the competition really sees the light of day, it is supposed to mobilize twenty clubs: the twelve founders, as well as three other permanent clubs (the name of PSG is mentioned, but the club for the moment has not joined) , and five other casuals.

Dissident clubs would also not have the right to compete in their national leagues, UEFA warned. “Any player involved” in the Super League could also be refused participation in the World Cup with his country, according to a joint statement issued in January by UEFA and the International Football Federation (FIFA). President of FIFpro, the world footballers union, Frenchman Philippe Piat did not respond to our request.

For the time being, in a press release issued on April 19, FIFA still hopes to avoid the creation of a Super League presented as “Closed and dissenting”. For this, the international federation invites its European confederation to “Use all legal, sporting and diplomatic means”.
