If the Paris Motor Show was a little disappointing, despite the many new features presented, the one in Brussels will have kept all its promises. Many manufacturers had indeed responded, including several from China including Maxus, a brand still unknown to us but which unveiled its Mifa 9, a large electric van, as well as Seres a few months ago. And it is precisely this that interests us today.

Imminent arrival

If the firm already markets the Seres 3 on the Old Continent, now it is preparing to continue its offensive with another model, a compact SUV called Seres 5. If this name vaguely means something to you, that’s normal, because it has already been sold in China since 2019. It was also present at the last edition of the Paris Motor Show in October, but had, to tell the truth, , not much is talked about.

Note that the Seres brand is marketed by the Chinese giant DongFeng. It is in particular to him that we owe the revised and corrected Chinese Dacia Spring, or the Chinese electric Peugeot 408 which “recharges” in three minutes.

Indeed, we had to wait until the beginning of 2023 for the brand to give us more information about the final version that will be sold in Europe. More opulent in its interior presentation, it takes up the style of the model intended for China, with its light signature recognizable at first glance. The template is more imposing than the Seres 3, with a length displayed at 4.70 meters.

Thus, the electric SUV is positioned against the Tesla Model Y, becoming a rival of choice for the star of the American brand, which became the best-selling car in Europe in November. Suffice to say that the Seres 5 will therefore have a lot to do, but it will be able to rely in particular on its generous technological endowment. We find in particular a large 17-inch touchscreen in an upright position, which incorporates almost all of the car’s functionalities. It then embeds an infotainment system provided by the tech giant Huawei.

Called HiCar, the latter acts as a sort of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto developed by the Chinese firm. But, unfortunately, it will not be possible to test this feature with us. The journalists of Clubic indeed contacted Seres France, which explains that the model sold in Europe will run on Android. Only the Chinese model is equipped with the system provided by the company, particularly known in Europe for its smartphones.

A two-way charging system

On the other hand, it is the Asian firm which will provide the electric traction chain of the SUV, called Huawei DriveONE. As the specialized site explains Arena EVthe Seres 5 is then equipped with two motors developing a cumulative power of 585 horsepower for 960 Nm of torque. Thus, the SUV is able to achieve 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.7 seconds for a maximum speed of 250 km / h.

Equipped with an 80 kWh battery, the two-wheel drive version has a range of 500 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. The all-wheel drive version with 90 kWh of battery announces a range of 530 km. That is a respective consumption of approximately 16 and 17 kWh / approximately 100 km. The batteries are of the semi-solid type.

On the other hand, the power that can be collected by the battery has not been specified, but it takes 45 minutes to go from 10 to 80%. A version equipped with a range extender in the form of aa 1.5 liter combustion engine is also offered in China, but will not be marketed here. Nevertheless, the launch of the Mazda MX-30 with a rotary engine in Europe could cause Seres to revise its plans.

Where the SUV stands out is above all its two-way V2V and V2L charging system. Thus, it is possible to power another car that needs to be recharged, but also to connect camping equipment such as a kettle for example. An increasingly widespread feature, which notably equips the Kia EV6, MG 5 and other Volvo EX90s. The latter would also be able to supply a house, in order to reduce tensions on the electricity network as well as expenses during peak hours.

The new Seres 5 should arrive in Europe during the month of March. The latter has already announced its prices for Germany, starting from €63,900 in its entry-level two-wheel-drive version. The version with all-wheel drive will be displayed from 67,900 euros. It is not given, especially with the new prices of the Tesla Model Y, very competitive.

In any case, the SUV will not be eligible for the ecological bonus, reserved for cars under 47,000 euros. The car is guaranteed for 4 years or 100,000 km and the battery for 8 years or 160,000 km.
