A job offer published then deleted clearly suggests that Fire TV will experience a major change.
While Fire TVs currently run FireOS, based on open source Android without Google services, the operating system of the Amazon range could soon change.
Amazon says goodbye to Android…
Information collected from job offers is certainly not the first time we have seen it and it will not be the last either. Today, it’s Amazon’s turn to let a little something slip through an announcement, indicating that the American giant is currently looking for a Fire TV Experience software development engineer.
So far, nothing particularly interesting. But it is in the details of the announcement that important information was spotted by AFTVNews ; this indicated, before its deletion, that one of the key parts of the position open to recruitment concerning a transition from Android to another operating system for Amazon TV keys:
“ Implement and deliver features on the Fire TV client codebase when transitioning from FOS/Android to native/Rust and React Native.

…and hello to Vega OS?
The latest rumors about this operating system point to one and the same name: Vega OS. Under this pretty name is nothing more and nothing less than an in-house operating system, developed by Amazon, which would aim to compete with Android for the company’s connected objects.
As the job offer suggests, this OS would work under React Native, an open source framework created by Facebook. If it is used, among other things, to develop Android, iOS and web services, it would nevertheless be mandatory for developers to rework their applications in order to make them compatible with Fire TVs and all other devices using VegaOS.
It’s difficult to know when such a change will take place, especially since a job offer generally means that work is in progress and not ready to be completed. But last year, one of Amazon’s connected screens (the 3rd generation Echo Show 5) had already migrated to an unnamed OS, suspected by ZatzNotFunny of simply being Vega OS.
