For the first time since 2020, carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will take place again without restrictions due to the pandemic.
Mayor Eduardo Paes handed over the city key to Carnival King Rei Momo on Friday.
The carnival is back with all its facets: Hundreds of “blocos” – samba and other music groups – are expected to parade through the streets of Rio in the coming days. The city administration has approved 445 moves. Tens of thousands of spectators in the stands and millions in front of the television are likely to follow the festival.

Up to 5.5 million expected
The Rio Carnival is the biggest party in the world, the tourism agency Riotur expects up to 5.5 million carnival fans in the city. After the storming of the government district in Brasília by supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro in January, the topic is the appreciation of democracy.
It is the first carnival festival in Rio de Janeiro without pandemic-related restrictions since 2020. Mayor Paes had canceled the street carnival in recent years due to the corona pandemic. Only the parades in the Sambodrome were postponed in April 2022.
