While there are of course some sacrifices to be made for such a low-priced tablet – mainly in terms of performance and choice of apps – it’s well worth the effort.
Fire tablets all run on Amazon’s Android operating system called Fire OS, which means you won’t find Google’s services and apps on them. Amazon even has its own app store for developers to use. That said, you can find most major apps, like Facebook, Zoom, and your favorite mobile games, even if Gmail, YouTube, or Google Maps aren’t available.
Amazon doesn’t use the best screens or the fastest processors in its Fire tablets, but after using one of these for a few days you’ll get used to it and realize that the components inside the tablet are more than capable – especially if you take into account the price of the machine. All of the models listed below are shown with their base storage allocation, but keep in mind that they all have microSD card support ranging from 512GB to 1TB.
Amazon Fire 7
The Fire 7 tablet is the most affordable of the lineup, but don’t let the price fool you. For under $50, you get 16GB of storage, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of memory, 2MP front and rear cameras, and a 7-inch screen with high resolution. 1024×600.
It offers 7 hours of use on a single charge, and 512GB of additional storage can be added via the microSD card slot. The Fire 7 is by far the brand’s slowest and worst-performing tablet, but it’s an inexpensive option, recommended for those who need a tablet just for video calling or entertaining the kids, or still want to use it as a Kindle reader, with the added bonus of being able to check your e-mails.

We recommend going with the Fire HD 8 Plus over the standard Fire HD 8, if your budget allows. For a slightly higher price, you will get 3 GB of memory instead of 2 GB, and your machine will work with a wireless charging base. While the importance of wireless charging is debatable, an extra gigabyte of memory means your apps won’t charge as often and overall performance will be slightly improved.
What’s more, Amazon sells a wireless charging pad for the HD 8 Plus which, when connected, turns the tablet into an Echo Show. That means you can interact with it just like you would the company’s smart displays, using voice commands to control smart home devices or watch videos.
The Fire HD 8 Plus has most of the same specs as its cheaper sibling, with an 8-inch display and 1280 x 800 resolution, 3GB of memory, 32GB of storage and a 2GHz quad-core processor. Battery life is expected to reach 12 hours. The optional charging cradle brings the total to around $150, but it’s worth it.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is the biggest and best tablet in the line. It’s the only tablet with a 1080-pixel display, and it comes with either 32 or 64GB of storage – which you can expand up to 1TB using a microSD card. Thanks to the quality of its screen and its size of 10.1 inches, the Fire HD 10 is perfect for watching your favorite series, gaming, shopping or reading a book. And it comes at a very reasonable price.
Amazon is also offering a bundle for the Fire HD 10, with a keyboard and a 12-month subscription to the Microsoft 365 Personal apps and services suite, including 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage.
