Dimensions, weight and exterior design

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a fairly sporty coupé SUV, with an aggressive front light signature and a rear that recalls the heritage of the “Mustang” name. The dimensions are relatively generous for the segment, with 4.71 meters long, 1.88 meters wide and 1.62 meters high, which calls for good habitability.

In terms of weight, it takes between 1,969 and 2,273 kilograms for the Mustang Mach-E, against between 1,905 and 2,175 kilograms for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, depending on the different batteries and configurations chosen.

If the Ioniq 5 is slightly shorter at 4.64 meters long, this is the only difference on paper between the two vehicles in terms of dimensions.

The neo-retrofuturist exterior design of the Ioniq 5 will not leave anyone indifferent, with knife-cut lines between the multiple elements that make up the bodywork, and a look that comes straight out of a concept car. This has the merit of getting out of very conventional styles.

Inside

Ford wanted to offer a completely redesigned interior with its Mustang Mach-E: we were quite won over during our test drive. The central 15-inch screen in landscape format, equipped with a physical wheel to manage the volume of the media is successful, when the materials used are of good quality throughout the cabin.

The habitability is however perfectible: at the front, the central console takes up a lot of space between the two occupants of the first row. Two trunks (81 liters at the front, and 402 liters at the rear) are offered on the Mustang Mach-E, just like on the Ioniq 5 (57 liters at the front, and 527 liters at the rear).

The interior of the Ioniq 5 is quite sober, where we find a dashboard offering two screens in landscape format, one behind the steering wheel and one more central. The center console, meanwhile, is completely open, favoring legroom rather than storage capacity.

Embedded technologies

Ford has not been light handed when it comes to the Mustang Mach-E’s on-board technologies, with all the best available today: smartphone key, 360-degree camera, heated and ventilated seats ‘before, or even compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it’s all there.

However, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has nothing to be ashamed of, with a head-up display or even an augmented reality view to facilitate parking maneuvers which are available on certain high-end versions.

In addition, there is Android Auto and Apple Carplay as standard, and a mobile application allowing you to control many vehicle settings, or even see its status (autonomy, battery level) in real time.

Ford Mustang Mach-E vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: which is the best electric car?

On the road

The Mach-E leaves aside its “comfortable SUV” aspect and reveals its full “Mustang” potential when it is abused on small winding roads. Road holding is impeccable and the sensations are there as soon as you want to press the accelerator.

In daily driving, it will prove to be very comfortable with the famous one-pedal driving, permitted thanks to an engine brake powerful enough to come to a complete stop.

For its part, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers paddles on the steering wheel to control the different levels of regenerative braking, which is quite practical if you want to quickly change driving modes.

On the road, it will prove to be very comfortable when driving like a good father or mother. And if we want to play with the limits of the vehicle, the laws of physics will quickly call us to order: the body roll is substantial, and the two tons of the Ioniq 5 will cause the vehicle to sag on its supports quite quickly during sharp turns.

The different engines offered

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is available in three different versions:

  • Mach-E: rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, top speed 180 km/h;
  • AWD: front and rear engine, all-wheel drive, 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, top speed 180 km/h;
  • GT: front and rear engine, all-wheel drive, 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, top speed 200 km/h.

Autonomy, battery and charging

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the champion of fast charging, without any possible dispute. Indeed, thanks to its 800 Volt battery architecture, it displays performance that makes your head spin: 18 minutes to go from 10 to 80% battery, with a charging power of up to 220 kW.

In the WLTP cycle, its autonomy varies between 384 and 481 kilometers depending on the version, which places it slightly below the figures displayed by Ford for the Mustang Mach-E.

If the fast charge is more modest at Ford, with a maximum power of 150 kW and a charge from 10 to 80% which takes between 38 and 45 minutes depending on the version, the autonomy in the WLTP cycle is better than the Ioniq 5: count between 400 and 610 kilometers for the American.

For its part, Ford offers the Mustang Mach-E from 50,450 euros, for the 76 kWh propulsion version. If you want to go to the other side of the table, the Mach-E GT full options will cost you the tidy sum of 80,250 euros.

Which to choose between the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5?

After exposing all the similarities and differences between the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, one of the two may outweigh the other. If you are fond of thrills behind the wheel, there is no doubt that the Mustang will have your favor. On the other hand, if long journeys are frequent, the exceptional fast charging capacity of the Ioniq 5 will be a major asset.

In terms of price, the entry-level is all the same much more accessible at Hyundai, and it will be advisable to reserve the Mustang Mach-E with deeper pockets: approximately 11,000 additional euros are to be invested to acquire the American compared to Korean style.
