Forest fires rage in Europe’s holiday destinations: NASA map shows terrifying fires

All the fires in the world are shockingly accurate on the free Forest fire map from NASA shown. Once you have surfed, you can go directly in the browser Call up all information on both current and already extinguished forest fires around the world. A red point on the map stands for a fire.

Noticeable: the hundreds of fires in southern Europe, especially in Greece, Turkey, the Balkans and parts of Italy. Sometimes the fires are out of control in the popular holiday regions.

Thanks to sophisticated NASA technologies, the forest fire map also gives you information about fires that were extinguished or even controlled years ago.

You can see whether there is a risk of forest fire at home in your region in midsummer Hazard index of the German Weather Service. There, the meteorological elements air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and total precipitation are taken into account.

The German Weather Service provides with the Forest fire hazard index a map ready that shows where the risk of a forest fire is currently highest. In five hazard levels (from “very low risk” to “very high risk”), the areas where the risk of fire in the forest is highest are shown in different color gradations.

What should I do if I discover a forest fire myself?

Walkers who notice a forest fire should alert the fire brigade immediately and only then attempt to extinguish the fire on their own. This is the advice of Ulrich Cimolino, chairman of the forest fire working group at the German Fire Brigade Association (DFV). In case of doubt, the following applies: “Better to call the fire brigade once than once too little”. No one who calls for help in good faith would have to fear costs or a complaint.

A challenge here: Often times, forest walkers cannot specify their location in more detail. But this is important so that the emergency services can move in quickly and start fighting the fire. “There are apps that are geared towards the forest and orientation in emergencies,” says Rainer Städing, honorary spokesman for the Association of German Foresters. the “Help in the forest” app for example, show you the nearest rescue point, the reference code can help emergency services with orientation.

If the fire brigade is alerted, you can try to put out the fire yourself. “I can do that with water if I have water,” says Ulrich Cimolino. Or you take branches with leaves and try to spread the fire, or you trample it down with sturdy shoes. This is only possible with small sources of fire, if the flames or the burning area are too big, you should get to safety.
