Former Germanwings employees are now being retrained as train attendants

The final decision was made in spring: the Germanwings airline will be shut down. For many employees who only found out about the end from the newspaper, this meant fears about continued employment, reports the "Bild" newspaper. As many as possible should continue to work for the Lufthansa Group, but since not all of them could stay that way, outside help was sought.

"The important thing now is to give each other a helping hand"

Deutsche Bahn, which has already retrained and taken on employees from other industries in the past, has been asked to take over some of the former Germanwings employees. And in fact, Deutsche Bahn is said to have developed a special and shortened application process for training as train attendants for former flight attendants.

As DB Personnel Director Martin Seiler explains to "Bild", the step was right and important, especially in the corona pandemic. “Dealing with the consequences of the pandemic requires enormous efforts and a lot of solidarity from all of us. It is now important to give each other a helping hand, ”said Seiler. He is certain that the new train attendants will be an asset to Deutsche Bahn and that "with their strong skills, they will further increase customer satisfaction on board our trains."

New job for the new year

The first training group in Cologne already passed the final exams before Christmas. At the end of the year, the practical exams should follow, so that the graduates, if they pass, can start the service as train attendants instead of flight attendants on time for the start of the new year.
