At the upcoming federal party conference, the CDU wants to make itself “government-ready,” said Jens Spahn. He believes coalitions with the SPD and the Greens make little sense. With his statements, however, Spahn distances himself from CSU boss Söder.

CDU presidium member Jens Spahn has warned the Union not to prepare for a new coalition with the SPD after the next federal election. Given the mood of change in the country, the Union must show that forming a government under Union leadership is possible even without the SPD or the Greens, said Spahn in Berlin. “Our goal must be to be able to shape the next coalition based on our own strengths,” said Spahn.

The message to voters must be: “People, if you really want there to be a different policy, you have to make us so strong that we can do politics without red and green,” said Spahn. Another message to voters should be: “If you vote for the AfD, then you increase the likelihood of left-wing coalitions,” because it would then be difficult to form governments without left-wing parties.

With these statements, Spahn differentiated himself from CSU leader Markus Söder, who at the weekend had shown a preference for a coalition with the SPD after the federal election. The Union should not work towards a new edition of the black-red alliance, said Spahn. “We have to take this liberating step,” said Spahn. “We want a middle-class majority for Germany – and that works.”

Next Monday, the CDU will meet in Berlin for a federal party conference with which the party wants to position itself for the upcoming federal election. “The message of the party conference must be: We are ready to govern,” said Spahn. “We will then be in a position to lead the country at any time and at the latest by the next federal election.”
